Several weeks ago I was watching my fish swim in the display tank. I noticed my yellow tang acting weird and actually scratching its side on the substrate. After closer inspection, I found black dots on the fins and the body. The dots were the size of a pin head. Not knowing what to make of this I immediately hit the computer to research the odd behavior and the black dots.

Much to my dismay I realized my display tank was infested with black ich. My conclusion was I introduced the black ich into the display with a purchase of a Karma Angel. I had not quarantined the angel prior to adding to the display tank.

So, off I went to Petco. (The only store that was open at 8:00pm) I purchased a 10g tank and a 3g tank. The 10g for the QT and the 3g for a fresh water dip.

I removed the fish from the DT and gave all a FW dip. I then transferred all fish to the QT with hyposalinity of 1.010 and watched the fish carefully every day. I did not give a formalin bath or use any other medications. The fish stayed in the QT for 4 weeks. I also immediately cleaned the DT substrate and performing a 50% water change. The only fish in my DT was the female Mandarine. Mandarine are not known to contract Ich due to the heavy slime coat. I kept the fish in the QT for four weeks. All did well except the Karma Angel. It was constantly picked on by the tang and the female clown. After 4 weeks in the QT the stress got to the angel and it did not make the transfer to the DT

You can follow my system and see a video of the QT and DT on YouTube.
